About the Work
Birds from Before Light: A Song in Praise of Halcyon Days is a cantata setting three original poems by the composer — a rare synthesis of compositional and literary imagination. The title evokes the liminal moment before dawn, when the first bird calls pierce the silence of the night, and the world stands poised between what was and what will be. Lopez's musical language here — always given to the flowing, the overlapping, the continuous — finds in this threshold imagery its ideal subject.
The halcyon, in classical mythology, was said to calm the seas and nest on their surface during fourteen days of midwinter calm — the "halcyon days" — a gift of stillness and beauty in the midst of the world's turmoil. Lopez takes this myth not as program but as emotional template: the cantata is music of luminous quietude, of natural imagery rendered with an orchestral delicacy that recalls, in spirit if not in technique, the nature writing of Messiaen. Yet the idiom is entirely Lopez's own — built from his principles of directed motion, textural layering, and the long phrase line.
The three poems, written by the composer himself, move from the intimacy of a single bird's voice to the full sonic landscape of a dawn chorus — a natural arc of growing light and increasing complexity that mirrors the musical unfolding. This is music that celebrates: the beauty of the physical world, the gift of creative perception, and the capacity of the human spirit to find grace even in the midst of difficulty.
