About the Work

The Magnificat stands at the center of Peter Dickson Lopez's creative life — a large-scale sacred cycle that takes as its foundation the ancient Latin canticle while reaching toward an entirely contemporary expressive world. Rooted in Gregorian chant as motivic and structural material, the work builds its architecture through an extended counterpoint that Lopez describes as "harmonic counterpoint" — a technique inherited from his earliest study of Bach, transformed through the lens of his full compositional development.

Each movement of the Magnificat is conceived as an autonomous unit capable of standing alone in concert, while simultaneously functioning as one arc of a larger whole. The KLK Symphony and Chorus performed the world premiere of Part I in 2026, and the score has been accepted for publishing. Parts II-IV are currently in active precompositional development, with extensive motivic extraction work underway. When complete, the four-part cycle is expected to span approximately fifty to sixty minutes — one of the most ambitious sacred works by an American composer of his generation.

The Magnificat engages what Lopez calls "archaic sub-ensemble timbres" — orchestrational choices that simulate the resonance of ancient instruments (sackbut, psaltery, vielle) within the modern orchestra, creating what he describes as a "temporal layering" in which the sacred past and the living present sound simultaneously. This is music of great spiritual depth, yet also of visceral orchestral power.

Compositional Highlights

Gregorian Foundation

Chant-derived motives pervade all movements, functioning simultaneously as melodic lines, harmonic generators, and structural pillars.

Archaic Timbres

Orchestration exploits the overtone/undertone relationships of each instrument family to simulate resonances from before the modern orchestra.

Modular Architecture

Each movement is programmable independently, in pairs, or as the complete cycle — facilitating gradual entry into the repertoire.

World Premiere Commission (Category II)

The Magnificat cycle is partially complete — Parts I–III have been recorded. The commissioning of Parts II–IV funds the writing of new movements within an existing, architecturally defined cycle.
The remaining movements of the Magnificat are available for cycle extension commissioning. Each movement is conceived as a self-contained concert work, approximately 15–20 minutes in duration, fully orchestrated. The composer welcomes discussion with orchestras and choral organizations interested in premiering individual movements or supporting the cycle as consortium partners.
